THE BULLITT FOUNDATION’S CASCADIA CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION – A GREEN BUILDING

Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood

Team Nelson was involved in The Bullitt Foundation’s visionary effort to develop the Cascadia Center for Sustainable Design and Construction in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. This structure is one of the nation’s first mid-rise commercial buildings to achieve “living building” status, a new benchmark for environmental sustainability.

Construction began in 2011 and was successfully completed in December, 2012. Team Nelson performed foundation excavation down to 24 feet of depth, removing 8,500 TCY of material. The project also required footing excavation and capillary break; a full sewer, storm and water package; and excavation and backfill of 900 lineal feet of trench for Seattle City Light to install PVC conduit and ultimately new power cable.

This project was considered to be one of the most “green” projects in the country, bringing forth inherent challenges. To keep in line with the project’s mission and intent, Team Nelson resourcefully recycled all demolished materials and incorporated as much recycled material into the project as was possible.

Once the Cascadia Center is fully occupied, they will start the clock on their Living Building certification* and once certificated the building will be self-sufficient for energy and water for at least 12 continuous months.
